BIG Bike Camps: TRAVELERS!

Travelers (1st and 2nd grade) $225

June 14 - 18, 2021
9:00am - 4:00pm

Our Travelers program is geared for newer riders.  We will make frequent stops at various parks and locations around town where they will learn new skills through engaging activities and discover what it’s like to ride beyond the street they live on!  We cover the essentials of road safety through games and skills clinics and put our skills to use on daily rides that are adapted for younger/newer bicyclists.  They will learn how to use their hands and voice to communicate turns and how to navigate a variety of stops and basic intersections alongside their peers.  Travelers is where the camp journey begins for most campers with every turn of the corner revealing an exciting, new cycling adventure.

Typical Mileage: 4-8 miles per day

Requirements

All campers must have a two-wheeled bicycle and helmet (no training wheels or balance bicycles), be able to start and stop unassisted, and ride in a straight line to be eligible for BIG Bike Camps! Camper bikes must pass a bike safety inspection prior to attending Bike Camp.

Bicycle Safety Check

Each camper's bike must pass a safety check before the first day of camp to ensure that it is safe and ready to ride. This includes both a bicycle fit check and a basic mechanical check.  You should schedule an appointment with your local bike shop to get your bike inspected, and the child attending bike camp needs to be present to be sure that the bicycle is fitted properly.

The mechanic doing the check must fill out the Bicycle Safety Check Form; please submit it ASAP via email (bike.camp@bikegso.org) or USPS (BIG Bike Camps!, PO Box 5764, Greensboro, NC 27435-0764) to the camp prior to your child’s first day of camp.

Please allow ample time for repairs and expect to pay any and all applicable charges for repairs made by your local bike shop in connection with your Bike Camp Safety Checklist.  If a repair is needed for a bike to meet the safety check, please be prepared to pay for all parts and labor costs. The Bicycle Safety Check is only an assessment of the camper’s bike and does not include repair costs.

What to Bring to Camp!

Please have your child bring the following items:

  • Properly functioning bike
  • Properly fitting helmet
  • Required Bicycle Safety Check Form from a certified bike mechanic
  • Backpack or bag suitable for everyday riding. Campers are expected to carry everything they need for the day. Backpacks are preferable to shoulder bags, which can affect balance
  • Bag lunch, snacks, and full water bottle (with water)
  • Comfortable and weather-appropriate attire (no bike-specific clothing is necessary for our camps)
  • Closed-toed shoes. No flip-flops or other open-toed sandals
  • Please leave electronics and valuables at home

Location

All of our 2021 Big Bike Camps! will originate at the picnic shelter at First Baptist Church (1000 W. Friendly Ave, Greensboro, NC 27410.)  Campers should arrive between 8:30 - 9:00 AM.  Parents should allow enough time to unload your child's bicycle and make sure that your child is prepared for the day.  Parents should plan to pick-up their children and their bicycles between 4:00 - 4:30 PM.  (There is no overnight bike storage.)

Discipline Policy

We have high expectations for all of our campers regarding safety. If a camper is not listening and following directions that impact their safety and/or the safety of others, we will ask them to stay home from camp the next day. Group safety and a quality camp experience are taken seriously at the BIG Bike Camps.
